Botswana - Spectacular Wildlife Destination

Affordable safaris to Botswana

Botswana is home to some of the world's greatest wildlife safari destinations: the spectacular Okavango Delta, a great green oasis in the heart of the Kalahari and the Chobe National Park, where the varied landscape and permanent waters ensure large concentrations of game and their predators. The Botswana forests are rich in bird life and renowned for the huge herds of Elephant.

There are a wide choice of Botswana safari holiday accommodation to match your wildlife experience, but availability is often limited so you need to book in advance - and you'll also need to think about when to go to Botswana as there are two distinctive seasons each with their own personality.

Peak season falls during the dry winter months between May and October, offering great game viewing as the wildlife becomes increasingly concentrated around water sources. Don't discount the rainy summer months between November and April though: the green season offers fantastic bird watching, lots of new-born animals and a whole load of special deals from lodges.

Best time to explore Botswana

The wilderness areas of Botswana are so diverse in habitat that it can be difficult selecting the best place to visit. Each area is unique, allowing for a range of safari activities. When the summer rains start towards the end of November the barren looking earth of Savute comes alive. Its rich new grasses are a magnet for herds of Burchell's Zebra and Wildebeest, which can be found on the Savute marsh where they foal before making for the lush grazing grounds of the Mababe Depression further south.

Explore Botswana from a mokoro (dug-out canoe) or a game viewing vehicle. Explore Botswana from a river boat or overland truck. Explore it from the air or from a quad bike. Ride an African Elephant in its natural habitat or splash across the floodplains on horseback. Come and explore Botswana. Dry April to October and wet November to March, Botswana will leave you breathless.

As the rains cease towards the end of February and the pans vaporize as the dry season looms, the herds gather once again. Closely followed by predators, they make their annual journey from Savute to the Linyanti and Kwando rivers to arrive around April.

During the winter months, the banks of the Chobe, Kwando and Linyanti rivers become the lifeblood of the wildlife, as there is no surface water in the surrounding bush. Elephant and Buffalo are also migratory, making seasonal movements of up to 200km from the Chobe, Kwando and Linyanti Rivers, as they concentrate in the pans in the Mopane woodlands to the south, where there is a sufficient food.
