Itinerary

Day 1 and 2: Namib Naukluft Park

Note: Depending on your flight's arrival time, you will either stay one night in Windhoek, or proceed on the six-hour drive to the Naukluft Park (Sossusvlei).

On the way: The road has some grand scenic passes and the Namib Desert stretches to infinity at the base of an enormous escarpment; stop for lunch on the Spreetshoogte Pass... you may want your camera for this.

When you're there: Enter Sossusvlei at sunrise and remember to take plenty of film or memory, sun cream, a hat, walking shoes and water. Explore the world's highest dunes and a sheltered pan with petrified trees that are hundreds of years old: climb the dunes and look out over a sea of sand. Private reserves in the area reveal fascinating flora, fauna and ancient desert landscapes.

Accommodation: (3*) Desert Homestead; (2*) Weltevrede Guest Farm: or affordable (tented camping) Solitaire Campsite

Day 3 and 4: Sossusvlei and Swakopmund

A 4-hour drive takes you through the gradual change from mountains and dunes to rolling grass-covered hills with scattered acacia trees. Swakopmund is a quaint resort town by the sea with an obvious German heritage at odds with its bleak surrounds.

On the way: Look out for the endemic Hartmann's mountain zebra as you leave; Kuiseb Canyon has some shady picnic spots; you can see springbok and pure-bred wild ostrich across the vast gravel plains of the Namib; the lunar landscape; look out for the Welwitschia plant.

When you're there: Restaurants, shops and attractions in Swakopmund; spend an extra day making the most of the cool air and the relative luxury of a hot shower and a coffee shop.

Among the many optional activities, we recommend a scenic flight over Skeleton Coast; a comfortable and informative boat cruise of Walvis Bay where you meet dolphins, sea lions, pelicans and terns; and quad biking, which is an exciting way to experience the sand dunes.

Accommodation: Sam's Giardino Hotel; (2*) Dunedin Lodge; (budget) Swakopmund Municipal Restcamp.

Day 5: Damaraland / Otjtotongwe Cheetah Sanctuary

Early departure: Enormous granite outcrops and dolerite valleys have been carved over aeons. Grassy plains, tree-studded riverbeds and endless open skies add to the grandeur and make this area one of the most scenic regions of Namibia. The drive to Damaraland takes up to 6 hours because there is much to see and do along the way to Otjitongwe.

When you're there: Game drives through conservancy areas in search of the famed desert-adapted elephant, black rhino and giraffe; among other hardy plains herds look out for Hartmann's mountain zebra. Here is an opportunity to see and inter-act with wild and tame Cheetah. Depending on the time of arrival you can explore the surrounding areas. We will enjoy our dinner around the campfire listening to the sounds of the wild.

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camping. Otjitotongwe or similar

Day 6 & 7: Etosha National Park

You will be about half way between the Skeleton Coast and Etosha National Park, the drive is a scenic few hours through more of Damaraland's singular beauty. The southern gate is much closer to southern Damaraland and will take about three hours.

When you're there: Etosha has an estimated 250 lions, 300 rhinos, 2,500 giraffes, 6,000 zebras, 20,000 springbok and 2,000 elephants. This on top of a large number of lesser and common plains herds, and abundant birds makes game viewing in Etosha something special. The surrounding lodges all have private reserves with equally impressive wildlife numbers and they offer private game viewing activities into the park.

Accommodation: (2*) Etosha Safari Camp, (tented camping) Halali Resort in Etosha

Day 8: Okavango River - Northern Namibia
Moving through the wild un-spoilt northern Namibia, we make our way to the NKwazi River Camp, on the bank of the Okavango River.

To hear the cry of a fish-eagle at sunset, or the beat of African drums around the campfire, this is truly Africa, here we will explore the traditional African villages of this region. We travel through this wild Africa, where you will experience true Africa in all its diversity. It's people, the diversity of natural Africa.

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camping. NKwazi or similar

DAY 9 & 10: Okavango Delta - Botswana
After an early start, we make our way along the western side of the Delta, to Delta Dawn Camp in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. From the edge of the Delta, 4x4 vehicles and motorboats transfer us to Delta Dawn Camp (1,5 hours), where we spend the night. The next day we spent exploring the network of water pathways through thick vegetation in mokoros (traditional canoes) and speedboat.
The Okavango, a massive river spilling its contents into the Kalahari desert sands, creates one of the world's only true inland deltas, and a unique ecosystem that supports a huge variety of animal and plant life. We spend two nights camping in a remote part of this wilderness, exploring the area on foot, game tracking and by mekoro.
There will also be time to simply appreciate the remoteness and serenity of the area.

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camping. Delta Dawn or similar

DAY 11 &12: Chobe National Park
To day we cross the border into Botswana, to the Chobe National Park.
It is a wilderness area of great beauty with rich green vegetation, palm trees, teeming with bird life and a vast population of wild animals, including large herds of elephant, buffalo, hippos and crocodiles.

We camp at Thebe, on the banks of the Chobe River and relax around the campfire in the evening. Chobe is famous for its beautiful scenery and magnificent sunsets. We explore the reserve with an optional sunset cruise.

When you're there: Chobe is another of Africa's great parks, famous for its large herds of elephant and buffalo and its prides of lion.

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camping. Thebe River Lodge or similar

DAY 13 &14: Victoria Falls - Zambia
The drive to Victoria Falls is about 1.5 hours. The customs and immigration formalities as you leave Botswana and enter Zambia may take a little longer. (Visa for own account)

On the way: The Kazangula Road often yields some excellent wildlife and bird sightings.

When you're there: Where to begin! Visit the falls from both the Zimbabwean and Zambian sides; Here are various optional activities for your own expense to do: white-water adventure; game viewing; sun-downer river cruises; scenic flights; craft markets; elephant-back safaris; adrenal fixes with bungee jumping, gorge swinging and skydiving.

We recommend: Tented or Lodge. Depended on availability

Day 15: Departure - Victoria Falls, or Livingstone Airports (Transfer cost for own account)

The flights to Johannesburg usually leave late afternoon so you have time to squeeze in any last-minute must-do activities or purchases.
